One very common question that is asked by people who have had a bail bond for a defendant paid through a bail bonds company is, “When will I get my money back?”At times those people will call their bondsman after the court case has finished and want to know when they will get their refund. The cost to purchase a Colorado bail bond can be as high as 15% of the defendant’s total bail amount. This means that if someone’s bail has been set at $10,000, you can expect to pay a bondsman up to $1,500 to purchase a bail bond. The difference between bail and a bail bond is the amount of money that you pay to the court. When a bail amount set to $10,000 cash is paid in full to the court, that money will be returned to the one who posted it at the end of the defendant’s case. However, in cases when a bail bond is used, you can pay a percentage of the money needed to a bail bondsman who will get the defendant released, but what you pay the bail bondsmen is a nonrefundable fee. You will not get the fee you pay to the bail bondsmen back. Consider it this way, a bail bond is like an insurance policy premium that you would pay to your auto insurance provider. With insurance premiums you don’t expect to be refunded if you don’t get any tickets or stay accident free. So, understanding that, the premium you pay to a bail bondsman cannot be refunded, even if the defendant goes to court.
